Tim Ferris interviews Neil Gaiman (my thoughts)

Tim Ferris titles the interview as, “The Interview I’ve Waited 20 Years To Do”.

You can find the original interview of Neil Gaiman here.

Tim Ferris interviews Neil Gaiman about Good Omens and other books

Let me start off by saying that this is not at all the interview that I thought it would be. I was expecting mystical stories surrounding the making behind the books. I was hoping for a look into his personal life, how the stories have influenced his life and his dealing with the characters. And don’t get me wrong, it definitely was in the interview, I was just really expecting more than there was. Except for that, WOW, what a privilege to see into the mind of one of my literary greats!

Some interesting parts that I did enjoy was Neil sharing about his writing process which starts at [23:35] . It seems that a big part of his success goes around his mindset and approach to writing.

He has one big rule during his set writing hours: you can either be writing, or doing nothing at all. By his writing spot in the garden, Tim notes how Neil has created an environment where not writing is as boring as possible and writing itself is as interesting as possible. Neil goes into greeeeattt detail (seriously, serious detail) about his favourite fountain pens and notepads, and the entire writing process.

For me, there were two stand out moments. The first was when Neil spoke about how he wrote The Graveyard Book [1:04:10] which is absolutely brilliant. I love hearing the genesis depiction behind where great ideas came from. The fact that the original character was based on his son is mind-blowing!

The second was all the parts where Neil spoke about Sir Terry Pratchett [1:16:24] and the stories he shared of their interactions. It’s heart-wrenching but also inspiring to hear about the man who influenced so many lives with his Discworld Series. I loved the way he spoke lovingly about Terry and the funny stories he shared about Terry’s sense of humour.

And finally, I am phenomenally excited about the Good Omens series that’s coming out on Amazon Prime.
Neil chats a bit around how this show has been a dedication to Terry and how he has refused to compromise on this series and has made it as Terry would have wanted it.
