Slow process

If I’m being honest,
people can be exhausting.
Sincerity is scary.

I sometimes catch myself copping out of difficult discussions,
or clinging to clichés, or just completely disengaging.
If I’m being honest,

I have to make sure I don’t take honesty too far – it’s hard enough
to make friends, and I could ruin it all with a careless remark.
Sincerity is scary,

and there’s no guarantee that what you say will be
interpreted the way you mean it, so I often opt to just leave it.
If I’m being honest,

I realise I can’t rely on pretty platitudes forever,
and that those who matter will stay.
Sincerity is scary,

but it’s better than never knowing where you stand.
I’m learning, I’m listening, I’m open, yet still (I’ll admit), I’m a little bit wary:
If I’m being honest,
sincerity is scary.

Today – on Day 5 of NaPoWriMo – the challenge was to write a poem that incorporates at least one of the following: (1) the villanelle form, (2) lines taken from an outside text, and/or (3) phrases that oppose each other in some way. I managed at least two… I’m not sure if “if I’m being honest” and “sincerity is scary” count as opposing ideas 😉 In any case, I wrote a villanelle (which I actually quite enjoyed) and incorporated lines from outside texts, specifically the titles of two songs I love: Dodie’s “If I’m Being Honest” (which Sara reminded me of in her post the other day!) and The 1975’s “Sincerity Is Scary”.
