Sea song

Something inside me misses the sea.
I’ve felt its pull while driving past;
I’ve heard it crying out to me.
I don’t know when I saw it last;
I only feel it’s been so long
since I have dug my toes in sand
and listened to an ocean song
and felt at peace upon this land.
I miss the waves that taste like grief,
the gastropods, the seagulls’ call;
Yet in this longing, what is chief?
I think about this most of all:
In all my missing of the sea,
d’you think it ever might miss me?

Today’s challenge was to write a sad poem – but one that achieves sadness through simplicity. Playing with the sonnet form was suggested as a help, because “its very compactness can compel you to be straightforward, using plain, small words”. So… I wrote a simple silly sad sonnet for the sea!
